Why Engine Oil Matters So Much
Engine oil is the lifeblood of your engine. It lubricates moving parts, dissipates heat, protects against corrosion, and removes contaminants. Over time, oil degrades: it oxidizes, accumulates metal particles and combustion byproducts. If oil is not changed on time, the engine wears out much faster.
Standard Change Intervals
Exact intervals depend on oil type and manufacturer recommendations:
- Mineral oil — every 5,000–7,000 km or every 6 months
- Semi-synthetic oil — every 7,000–10,000 km or every 6–12 months
- Full synthetic oil — every 10,000–15,000 km or once a year
For newer vehicles (after 2015), most manufacturers recommend full synthetic and an interval of 15,000–20,000 km. Always check your owner's manual.
Signs Your Oil Needs Changing
Don't wait for the next service if you notice these symptoms:
- Dark or black oil on the dipstick — fresh oil is amber-colored, old oil turns black
- Burning smell in the cabin — oil is overheating or leaking onto hot parts
- Engine noise at startup — oil is not providing sufficient lubrication
- Oil pressure warning light — a critical signal, stop and check the level
- Increased oil consumption — topping up more than 0.5 L per 1,000 km
Choosing the Right Viscosity
The required viscosity is printed on the oil filler cap or in your manual:
- 5W-30 — the most common specification for modern petrol engines. Starts well in winter (down to -30°C), suitable for Estonia's moderate climate
- 5W-40 — for sportier or higher-load engines and diesels. Maintains pressure better at high temperatures
- 0W-20 / 0W-30 — for the latest engines with start-stop systems; recommended by Toyota, Honda, Ford
Never mix mineral and synthetic oil — this will degrade the mixture's properties.
Tips for Estonia
Estonia's climate features cold winters and moderate summers. We recommend:
- Using 5W-30 or 5W-40 synthetic year-round
- Checking oil level monthly (takes 2 minutes)
- Replacing the oil filter every time you change the oil
