Coolant Types G11/G12/G13: When to Change and What Not to Mix

Why Coolant Matters

Coolant keeps your engine at the right temperature in both summer and winter. The wrong coolant or low level can cause overheating and expensive engine damage.

The Differences

  • G11 (blue/green) — older generation, change every 2 years / 60,000 km
  • G12 / G12+ (red/pink) — longer lifespan, 3–5 years / 150,000 km, organic inhibitors
  • G13 (purple) — modern, more eco-friendly (glycerol-based), 5 years / 250,000 km

Why You Must Not Mix Types

Mixing different coolant types neutralises the corrosion inhibitors and creates sludge that can block the cooling system. This leads to thermostat failure or engine overheating.

When to Change?

Check coolant level and colour regularly. Dark, brownish coolant means the inhibitors are breaking down — change it immediately.
