What Your Suspension Does
The suspension performs three core functions: keeping your wheels on the road, absorbing shocks, and ensuring steering control. When it wears out, comfort is not the only thing that suffers — safety deteriorates sharply. Braking distances increase, the car becomes unstable and tyres wear unevenly.
5 Signs of Worn Shock Absorbers
- Banging and jolting on rough road — you feel every pothole sharply. New shock absorbers absorb these smoothly.
- The car "nose-dives" when braking — the front dips down and bounces back up several times. A classic sign of worn front shocks.
- Excessive body roll in corners — too much lean in side winds or bends indicates the stabilisers are not doing their job.
- Uneven tyre wear — patches and irregular tread pattern show the wheel is not maintaining consistent contact with the road.
- Oil leaking from the shock absorber — a visible wet streak on the shock absorber rod is a clear replacement signal.
When to Replace Shock Absorbers
Manufacturers generally recommend checking suspension every 20,000 km and considering replacement:
- Every 80,000–100,000 km (motorway driving, good road conditions)
- Every 50,000–60,000 km (city driving, poor roads — typical in Estonia!)
- Immediately if any of the above symptoms appear, regardless of mileage
Important: shock absorbers must always be replaced in pairs — either both front or both rear. Replacing just one creates uneven handling.
Other Suspension Parts That Wear Out
Shock absorbers are not the only components that wear — also check:
- Strut top mounts (support bearings) — knock on bumps or when turning the wheel, noisy steering
- Stabiliser bar links and bushings — knock in the city and on rough surfaces. Cheap parts but noticeably annoying
- Ball joints — a mechanic checks these on a lift. Worn ball joints are genuinely dangerous
- Rubber bushings (silent blocks) — rubber parts that absorb vibration, typically last 5–8 years
What This Means for Estonia
Estonian roads are in worse condition in winter and spring — freeze-thaw cycles damage the surface and accelerate suspension wear compared to southern countries. We recommend:
- Checking your suspension every spring after winter
- Using quality shock absorbers — Bilstein, Monroe and KYB are reliable brands
- Asking Viktor for advice — he will find the right parts using your VIN or vehicle details
