Car Bulb Types: H1, H4, H7, LED, Xenon — Choosing and Replacing

Main Bulb Types

  • H1 — single filament, used for high beams and fog lights
  • H4 — dual filament (low + high beam), most common on older cars
  • H7 — single filament, popular on European cars since the 2000s
  • Xenon (HID) — bright white-blue light, requires a ballast unit
  • LED — low energy use, long lifespan, only legal with E-mark certification

Estonian Legal Requirements

In Estonia (and across the EU), only ECE-homologated bulbs are permitted. LED conversion kits for halogen sockets are legal only if the kit carries an E-mark. Without it, your car will fail the technical inspection (tehnoülevaatus).

Practical Tip

Always replace bulbs in pairs — this keeps lighting even and prevents the second bulb from failing shortly after.
