OEM vs Aftermarket Parts: What to Choose and When

Three Types of Auto Parts

The auto parts market distinguishes three categories that are often confused:

  • Genuine / OE (Original Equipment) — produced by the same manufacturer that built your car. Sold through a dealer under the car brand's logo (BMW, Volkswagen, Toyota). Highest price.
  • OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) — made by the same factory that produced the original part, but sold without the car maker's branding. For example, Bosch makes spark plugs both as Volkswagen originals and in its own Bosch packaging.
  • Aftermarket — produced by a third party to their own standards. Quality ranges widely, from cheap no-name production to premium alternatives (Febi, Lemförder, Sachs).

When Genuine Parts Are Worth It

Some situations where genuine is clearly the better choice:

  • Car under warranty — non-genuine parts can void the manufacturer warranty
  • Electronics and ECUs — original control units are programmed specifically for your vehicle
  • Safety-critical locking system components — airbag triggers, ABS sensors
  • Minor consumables on a new car — if the vehicle is under 3 years old and you want to maintain its resale value

When OEM Parts Are the Best Choice

In most cases, OEM is the best compromise: same quality, lower price (15–40% cheaper).

  • Brake pads and discs (Brembo, ATE, TRW — they make the originals too)
  • Filters (Mann, Mahle, Hengst)
  • Suspension parts (Lemförder, Febi Bilstein, Meyle)
  • Spark plugs (NGK, Bosch, Denso)

When Aftermarket Makes Sense

  • Older car (over 10 years) — the cost of genuine parts does not justify the investment
  • Cheap consumables (bulbs, washer fluid, drive belt) — quality difference is minimal
  • A quick temporary fix before a more thorough repair

Warning: avoid cheap safety components from unknown brands (brakes, steering, suspension). This is not the place to cut costs.

Practical Recommendations by Category

  • Engine oil and filters — OEM (Mann, Mahle, Castrol, Mobil)
  • Brakes — OEM or quality aftermarket (Brembo, ATE, TRW)
  • Shock absorbers — OEM or Bilstein, Monroe, KYB
  • Bulbs — aftermarket is perfectly adequate (Osram, Philips)
  • Wiper blades — aftermarket (Bosch Aerotwin is cheaper than genuine and just as good)
  • Timing belt kit — only genuine or OEM. Do not take chances here.
