Electric Cars: What Parts Do They Still Need

Do Electric Cars Really Need No Maintenance?

One of the most common myths: "Electric cars have no engine oil, no filter, no timing belt — there's nothing to service." That is partly true, but not entirely. EVs have far fewer moving parts than internal combustion engine vehicles, but wear items still exist.

What Electric Cars Do NOT Have (vs Petrol)

  • Engine oil and oil filter
  • Spark plugs
  • Timing belt or chain system
  • Fuel filter
  • Clutch (on most models)
  • Traditional gearbox components

What Electric Cars Still Have — and What Wears Out

Brake Pads and Discs — but Less Often

Electric cars use regenerative braking — the motor acts as a generator to slow the car while charging the battery. This reduces mechanical brake use by up to 70%. Brake pads last 2–3 times longer than on a petrol car.

The problem: infrequent use means discs can rust. We recommend occasional harder braking to clean the discs.

Tyres — Wear Faster!

Electric cars are heavier (battery weight) and their motors deliver instant torque. This means tyres wear 20–30% faster than on a comparable petrol car. Regenerative braking also accelerates wear.

Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen ID.4, Hyundai IONIQ 5 — all need more frequent tyre checks.

Suspension

Due to the heavier body, EV suspension carries a greater load. Shock absorbers, ball joints and rubber bushings wear similarly to petrol cars. Check suspension regularly.

Brake Fluid

Even though the brakes are used less often, brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and must be replaced every 2 years regardless of mileage.

Air Filters

The cabin air filter needs replacing — typically every 2 years. It is cheap and straightforward.

Coolant

The battery pack needs cooling. Coolant should be checked periodically and replaced according to the manufacturer's schedule (usually every 5 years).

Estonia's EV Market in 2026

There are increasing numbers of electric cars on Estonian roads. The most popular models:

  • Tesla Model 3 and Model Y — most common, good charging infrastructure
  • Volkswagen ID.4 — popular in Estonia thanks to the strong VW brand reputation
  • Hyundai IONIQ 5 / 6 — fast charging (800V)
  • Polestar 2 — Swedish brand, popular among business users

Charging network: Estonia has over 1,000 public charging points — one of the densest networks in Europe per capita.

What VINParts Offers EV Owners
